Build A Long-term Relationship
There are lots of ways that people become close and get to know each other. The trick is to experiment with different ways of bonding that you feel comfortable with and seeing what works. Here are some thoughts to possibly get things started...
Once your families have gotten to know each other (see "getting to know your mentor" for some ideas) it may be helpful to simply spend time together. What do both families like doing? Make it a regular thing and simply hang out. As time passes and you get more comfortable with each other your discussions will probably go deeper and deeper.
Try to pick an event to go to together each month, or create one for your families to enjoy. Go to the park, or the river, or take a hike together. It doesn't have to cost money and it shouldn't take a lot of time to prepare. The point is to make a point to get together on a regular basis.
One way to simply hang out is to have a meal together on a regular basis. Maybe the fourth Friday of every month. Change up who's house you eat at so the responsibility is shared as far as meal prep goes. You can look at the gathering section of this website under dinners to find easy meals, decorations, and meal blessings. It doesn't have to be high maintenance, in fact, the more relaxed, the better.
Once connections are made you will hopefully be able to share your lives with each other in a loving, relaxed, and natural way. Being in an intentional relationship with another person or family can really impact the lives of all involved.
